Intimate NYC Wedding at Bobo Restaurant | Michael + Afonso

Supporting the LGBTQ+ community is something that I am personally passionate about, so you’d have to know I was delighted to connect with Michael & Afonso. I had been yearning to photograph the tenderness, love, and joy of a same-sex marriage for years, yet hadn’t had the opportunity before. After enjoying their candid moments, the laughs upon laughs (Afonso is quite the animated man, and he sure knows how to bring the best out of Michael), the charm & warmth of their dearest family and friends below, please continue below to hear the Love Story of how they came to be.

Let’s tell the love story of Michael & Afonso. Michael contacted me and mentioned that he was looking for a photographer to capture his intimate brunch same-sex wedding. After some conversation, and taking a look through my wedding photography portfolio, we knew we had made a connection.

Well, the day finally came, and I photographed their intimate NYC same-sex wedding at Bobo Restaurant. This cozy eatery turned wedding ceremony and reception locale is tucked away amongst the charming brownstones of the West Village, yet with a clear view of the Freedom Tower at One World Trade Center. Michael & Afonso exchanged laughs, vows, and more love than I could have asked for to photograph that day.

Michael & Afonso first met online on OK Cupid in 2014. They talked for about 3 weeks before meeting, and eventually had their first date on July 5, 2014.  They chose to meet at Candle 79, a quaint vegan eatery. Their meal (and their connection) was a success. The meal led to a movie, and then to Central Park.  They hit it off right away, and already had a third date planned even before going on their second date!

Michael & Afonso had been together for 5 years prior to getting married at Bobo. They’ve both evolved and changed over the years, and with growth comes maturity and a constantly renewing appreciation of the love they both share. Love, patience, and respect are the key ingredients that keep them together.

Having fun and seeing new sights keeps their relationship blossoming. They love to travel and do it often. Seeing and experiencing new places and cultures together always keeps things fresh and exciting.

After their NYC wedding, Michael & Afonso honeymooned in Brazil, at Praia dos Carneiros. They had their own private hut in a coconut grove on the beach. How romantic; right? I think I know where I’m planning my next getaway!

Do you know what I love hearing? I asked Michael if anything’s changed since I photographed their wedding. He said; “Honestly, other than saying, "my husband", not much has changed.”

Michael & Afonso were looking for somewhere special to have their wedding. They found Bobo in NYC from a recommendation of a friend.  Once they toured the restaurant, they knew it would be perfect.  They decided to do a smaller, intimate brunch wedding with 50 guests. They loved the feel Bobo provided.  The ambiance was great and the food was top notch. Bobo knocked it out of the park.

The smiles on their families' and friends' faces were have left a lasting memory for Michael & Afonso.  They said they really could feel the love in the room.  It was almost tangible.

Thank you to Michael & Afonso for inviting me to photograph your intimate NYC wedding.
