Ringwood Botanical Gardens Skylands Engagement Session - Brittany & Tom
Oh, Brittany and Tom. And Toby! Let me tell you, this engagement session was one for the books. Not only were we surrounded by the serene beauty of New Jersey’s Ringwood State Botanical Gardens, but their adorable pup, Toby, totally stole the show. Let’s dive into why this spot is perfect for engagement photos, especially when your four-legged friend is involved.
Why Ringwood State Botanical Gardens?
If you’re not familiar with the magic that is Ringwood State Botanical Gardens, let me paint a picture: lush greenery, gorgeous floral displays, and perfectly curated walkways that look like they belong in a movie. It’s basically a dream backdrop for any couple’s love story.
Brittany and Tom were all about capturing their connection in a natural setting, and honestly, the Gardens delivered beyond expectations. The peaceful vibe and pops of color added a romantic, almost fairytale-like atmosphere to every shot. Plus, there are so many cozy little nooks to explore, making every moment feel intimate.
Oh, and let’s not forget Toby, who took full advantage of those wide-open spaces. If he could write a Yelp review, it would definitely be five stars.
Why Include Your Dog in Your Engagement Session?
Now, let’s talk about Toby because, honestly, I am a big fan of engagement shoots that involve dogs. Sure, they’re cute and cuddly, but there’s more to it than that. Bringing your dog to your session adds a whole new layer of authenticity. After all, they’re part of your story too!
Toby wasn’t just a cute sidekick; he was an icebreaker. He had all of us laughing (and running) from the moment we started. Dogs have a way of loosening up the vibe, keeping the couple relaxed, and adding fun, candid moments that would never happen without them. Also, those puppy snuggles? They’re pure gold in photos.
And let’s be real: when you’re with the love of your life, in a stunning location, and your fur baby is right there with you, it feels like the universe is giving you a little wink, like “Yup, you’re doing life right.”
Tips for Engagement Sessions with Dogs
If you’re considering bringing your dog to your engagement session, do it. Here are a few tips to make the day just as smooth and fun as Brittany, Tom, and Toby’s:
Bring Treats and Toys: Keep your dog’s energy and focus in check with their favorite treats or toys. You’d be surprised how well a squeaky toy works for getting those adorable head tilts!
Plan for Breaks: Dogs can get a little overwhelmed (or just plain tired), so let them run around and take breaks. I will admit though…Toby was a trooper. He never gave up…because he’s a rockstar!
Have a Handler on Hand: Bring along a friend or family member who can help manage your pup when it’s time for a few solo couple shots. It’ll give you the freedom to focus on each other for a bit without worrying about what your dog is up to. Big thanks to Jackie, Brittany’s sister AND a former bride of mine, for keeping Toby company while mom and dad were playing!
Match Your Outfits: Ok, I’m kidding (sort of). But think about coordinating your dog’s collar or leash with your outfits. Toby’s blue leash matched Brittany’s dress perfectly, and the photos were chef’s kiss.
Wrapping Up the Day
At the end of the session, Brittany, Tom, and I decided to have a little fun in the parking lot…yet you’d never know it was a parking lot. Colored gels on my flashes, a little canned aerosol atmosphere (big thanks to Jackie for unleashing the epic smoke effect!) and some playful as heck people. What more do we really need?
So if you’re planning your engagement session and you’re wondering if you should bring your dog, take it from Toby—absolutely. A stunning location like Ringwood State Botanical Gardens, your favorite person, and your pup? That’s engagement photo perfection right there.
Ready to bring your dog along for your session? Toby approves, and so do we. :)
Ok, now let’s talk about the awesomesauce that is Brittany & Tom!
How did you meet? When Brittany was a freshman at Stockton College, she was told to take a speech argument class. Later to find out that it was the wrong class and full of upperclassmen, Tom was one of them. The next semester Brittany joined a sorority and Tom was already in a fraternity which allowed them to see each other more. Brittany moved to NC after graduating college. 8 years later Tom slides into her DMs(😂) asking about living in NC. He drove 10 hours to Wilmington, NC for their first date. Tell me this isn’t epic love right from the get-go!
How has your relationship grown over the years? Our relationship started long distance, then Brittany moved back to NJ. After a couple months in NJ we moved to NC. We started in a new town, new jobs, and even learned how to raise chickens. We encourage each other to be our best selves. Oh, and the eggs from said chickens they gifted me? Amazing!!!
How did you get engaged? Tom planned a trip to New Bern, NC for the day. He planned to propose at the park overlooking the water. But as we drove closer to New Bern we noticed bikes on the bridge only to realize a Bike for MS event was happening that whole weekend. The park was filled with tents and booths. We still took a walk along the water. Tom asked a lady to take a picture of us. Funny thing, the lady was giving us cues on posing, but she had no idea he was about to propose. Then next to a dead blue crab, Tom got on one knee and popped the question. Talk about an interesting third wheel that crab was!
What are some fun things you do together as a couple and with friends? We enjoy spoiling our dog, Toby; watching our chickens play outside; gardening; Tom loves to cook and Brittany loves to be a taste tester and vice versa when Brittany bakes; tanning by the pool; and traveling. This sounds like THE life!
What about each other has inspired you to grow into being perfect partners over the years? Tom has helped me to be confident in myself, make healthier daily choices, and be one with nature (when mosquitos don’t attack me). Brittany has helped me be calm, and understanding, and helps me keep my cool. Teamwork makes the dream work!
What are your dreams for the future? We plan to start a family, have a house in the mountains, get more farm animals, and be able to travel. Sounds good to me!
How did you find out about me? What was it about me and my services that told you I was the one? Brittany’s sister Jackie used your services at her wedding in 2021. When we met you then we loved how friendly you were! And when we saw all her pictures we loved the creativity and moments captured. When looking for vendors for ourselves we want someone who will capture the beauty of our wedding locations and embrace us! Guys, my heart could not be any fuller right now. I and so grateful that we reconnected after all these years, and I cannot wait to see where your Love Story goes from here 🫶🏻
